What is a food chain?

A food chain shows how energy moves in a straight line from one organism to the next. It begins with sunlight fueling plants, which are eaten by herbivores, then by carnivores, and so on, with energy passing along a single linear pathway. This is different from a food web, which is a network of many interconnected chains, and from other ideas like organisms sharing a habitat or energy cycling in loops. So a simple linear pathway showing energy moving from one organism to another best captures what a food chain is.
